How these times are worked out

Each city is tied to an IANA time zone identifier rather than a fixed offset, which is what makes the difference when clocks change. Lisbon and London share an offset for most of the year but switch on different rules from New York, and half the southern hemisphere moves in the opposite direction to the northern. Your browser resolves the zone against its own copy of the database, so the times on this page are correct on the day you read it, not on the day it was published.

Offsets shown next to each city are current, not standard. A city on summer time will read one hour ahead of its winter offset. Where a zone runs a fractional offset — India, Iran, Nepal, parts of Australia — the minutes are shown too.

Planning across zones
