They are not spread evenly. 51 are in Asia, 28 in the Americas, 19 in Africa and 15 in Europe. Not one city in the Middle East or Oceania comes in under $1,000 — the cheapest we score are Irbid in Jordan at $1,200 and Savusavu in Fiji at $1,500.

The trade-off is not what people assume. Cheap does not mean disconnected: Burgas in Bulgaria scores 4.4 for internet at $1,000, Veliko Tarnovo 4.3 at $900, Niš in Serbia 4.3 at $900 and Da Nang 4.2 at $1,000. What you give up at this price is usually air quality or things to do, not bandwidth.
How this page was built. Every comparison linked here is generated from one dataset of 500 cities in 100 countries, scored on the same seven-point scale for cost of living, internet, safety, walkability, weather, air quality and things to do. Costs are a single monthly figure for one person living, not holidaying — rent, food, transport and utilities — held in whole hundreds of US dollars because that is the precision the underlying sources support.
