Two cities, one country: 1,000 comparisons

Published 2026-08-04 · last checked 2026-08-04 · written and calculated in-house by timedatelive

Choosing between two cities inside one country is the commonest version of this question and the one general cost-of-living tables answer worst. These are all 1,000 of the same-country comparisons we hold, ten per country.
The short answer

There are 1,000 same-country comparisons on this site — exactly ten for each of the 100 countries we score, because we hold five cities in every country and every one of those five is compared with the other four.

The gap between the cheapest and the dearest city inside a single country is usually larger than people expect. In the United Kingdom and the United States it is $1,500 a month. In Egypt it is $100.

The ten countries where our cheapest and dearest city are furthest apart, 2026 cost of living for one person per month.

Why this is worth checking before you book. A country-level cost figure hides this spread completely. Glasgow at $2,300 and London at $3,800 are the same country and the same currency, and one of them is 65% dearer than the other. The narrowest spread we hold is Egypt: Alexandria $800 against Cairo $900.
How this page was built. Every comparison linked here is generated from one dataset of 500 cities in 100 countries, scored on the same seven-point scale for cost of living, internet, safety, walkability, weather, air quality and things to do. Costs are a single monthly figure for one person living, not holidaying — rent, food, transport and utilities — held in whole hundreds of US dollars because that is the precision the underlying sources support. The groupings and every count on this page are computed from that dataset at build time, not entered by hand. Read the full method on the methodology page.
