Where does daylight barely change all year?

Some people move somewhere warm and still feel wrong in January. Often the thing they were missing was not heat but consistency — a day that does not change length underneath them.

Near the equator, it barely does. The following cities have days that vary by less than half an hour between midsummer and midwinter. If seasonal light swings are what get you, this is the list that matters, and it is not the same as the warm list.

Short answer

Kisumu has the flattest year of any city we track: its longest and shortest days differ by 0h 01m. Every city within about five degrees of the equator gets roughly twelve hours of daylight every day of the year.

The trade-off is that you never get a long summer evening either. Sunset in Singapore is around 19:00 in December and almost exactly the same in June.

Twelve hours, every day, forever

The physics is simple. Daylight length varies with latitude because the Earth’s axis is tilted 23.4°; on the equator that tilt produces almost no effect on the length of the day, only on where the sun sits in the sky at noon. Move away from the equator and the swing grows slowly at first and then very fast — it is about an hour at 10° of latitude, three and a half hours at 30°, and eight hours by the time you reach northern Germany.

The practical effect of a flat year is that your routine does not need to change with the season. Sunrise is at roughly the same time in January and July. If you like getting up with the light, you can keep the same alarm for twelve months, which sounds trivial and turns out not to be.

What you give up

  • No long evenings. The 21:30 sunsets that make a northern European June feel endless simply do not exist near the equator. Dark at seven, all year.
  • No seasonal cue. Some people find the sameness disorienting after several months — there is nothing in the light to tell you the year is passing.
  • Weather still has seasons. Flat daylight does not mean flat climate. Most of these cities have a pronounced wet season, and in parts of Southeast Asia it is the defining feature of the calendar. Daylight is the one variable that stays put.
Method. Swing is the absolute difference between daylight length on 21 December 2026 and 21 June 2027, both computed from latitude with the standard −0.833° refraction correction. Cities within a metropolitan area — the Singapore neighbourhoods, for instance — appear separately because they are separate entries in our city data; their figures are effectively identical, as you would expect.

The opposite extreme

For contrast: the same calculation run on the far north gives Tromsø a swing of 24 hours (polar night to midnight sun), Rovaniemi almost 22, and Reykjavík 17. Those cities are wonderful in June and genuinely difficult in December, and the December daylight table shows exactly how difficult.

A reasonable strategy that quite a lot of people converge on independently: take the high-swing cities in their good half of the year and the flat-swing cities in the other half. That is a different planning question from finding one base that works year round, and it puts a premium on cities with good short-stay visa terms.

Which city has the most consistent daylight?

Kisumu in Kenya, where the longest and shortest days of the year differ by 0h 01m. Anywhere within a few degrees of the equator is effectively the same.

Does the equator get exactly 12 hours of daylight?

Slightly more, by about seven minutes. Sunrise and sunset are defined by the sun's upper edge rather than its centre, and the atmosphere refracts light around the horizon, so day beats night marginally everywhere on Earth over a year.

Is constant daylight good for sleep?

It removes one variable — your light cue does not drift through the year, so a fixed schedule stays aligned. It does not fix anything else, and equatorial cities are often hot at night, which matters more for sleep than light does.

Where is the seasonal swing largest?

Above the Arctic Circle, where it reaches the full 24 hours: Tromsø has polar night in December and midnight sun in June. Reykjavík, at a lower latitude, still swings about 17 hours between solstices.
