Which cities suit early risers?
If your best working hours are the first three of the day, the number you want is not average temperature or even daylight length. It is the latest the sun rises at any point in the year — because that is the day your routine breaks.
We calculated it for every city in the data and sorted on the worst case.
In Fortaleza the sun has never risen later than 05:39 on either solstice. Equatorial cities and cities near the eastern edge of a time zone dominate this list.
By contrast, in a northern European winter sunrise can be after 09:00 for weeks, which makes an early routine a matter of willpower rather than habit.

Two separate things make a sunrise early
The first is latitude, or rather the lack of it. Near the equator sunrise sits around 06:00 all year, give or take twenty minutes, and never wanders. That is the reliability half.
The second is your position inside the time zone. At the eastern edge of a zone the clock is behind the sun, so the sun comes up early — which is the flip side of the problem described in cities that go dark before 5pm. If you are a morning person, the eastern edge of a zone is a feature, not a bug: you get your light when you want it and you were not going to use the evening anyway.
The two effects are independent, which is why the list mixes tropical cities with some surprisingly high-latitude ones.
What an early-sunrise base is worth
- You get a genuine head start on European clients. Being up and lit at 06:00 in Asia means several hours of quiet work before anyone in Europe opens their laptop.
- Exercise stops being a negotiation. The single most common reason morning routines collapse is doing them in the dark, and it is much easier to keep a habit that the sun is already supporting.
- You avoid the worst heat. In tropical cities the hours between 06:00 and 09:00 are the only comfortable outdoor window for much of the year.
The catch
An early sunrise is also an early sunset. Nowhere gets both, because the total is fixed by latitude and the clock only decides how it is distributed. If you want light at both ends of the day, what you actually want is a long day, which means a summer at high latitude, not a year at low latitude.

Consistently, Fortaleza — its latest sunrise on either solstice is 05:39. Cities on the eastern edge of a wide time zone also score well because their clock runs behind the sun.
Why does sunrise time vary so much between nearby cities?
Time zone boundaries. Two cities a few hundred kilometres apart can be on different clocks, which shifts sunrise by a full hour even though the sun arrives at almost the same moment.
Is an early sunrise better for productivity?
It makes an early routine easier to keep, which is not the same claim. Light is the strongest cue for the body clock, so a lit 6am is much less effortful than a dark one. Whether early hours suit your work is a separate question.
Which cities have the latest sunrises?
High-latitude cities in midwinter — northern Finland, Iceland and Norway see sunrise after 10:00 or 11:00 in late December, and above the Arctic Circle it does not rise at all.
