Aggregate scores hide disagreements, and the disagreements are more informative than the aggregate. This page pulls out every city in our dataset where our own numbers point in opposite directions — where we rate a city highly overall while rating it poorly on something most people would consider non-negotiable, and where the reverse happens.

Nothing here is an error. It is a demonstration of what a single number cannot carry.

Short answer

4 cities score 4.0 or better overall while scoring 3.4 or worse for safety: Rio de Janeiro (score 4.1, safety 2.9), Mexico City (score 4.3, safety 3.0), Medellín (score 4.4, safety 3.2), Cape Town (score 4.3, safety 3.3).

In the other direction, 29 cities rate 4.6 or better for safety while scoring 3.4 or worse overall — almost all of them in Iceland, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The four cities where the score outruns the safety number

Rio de Janeiro is the sharpest case: a 4.1 overall score built on 4.9 nightlife — the highest in the dataset — sitting above a 2.9 safety rating, the lowest of any city we rate above 4.0.

Mexico City (4.3 against 3.0), Medellín (4.4 against 3.2) and Cape Town (4.3 against 3.3) complete the set. All four are genuinely excellent cities to be a remote worker in, and all four have safety profiles that vary dramatically by neighbourhood in a way a city-level number cannot express.

The right reading is not that the score is wrong. It is that in these four cities the single most important decision you make is where inside the city you live, and no city-level rating on any site — ours included — can make it for you.

The reverse case, and what it says about the score

The opposite list is longer and more uniform. Iceland's smaller towns, the Qatari and Omani cities, and the Saudi entries all rate at or near the top of the dataset for safety while scoring in the low threes overall. Keflavík rates 4.9 and scores 3.2. Sohar in Oman rates 4.8 and scores 3.1.

Look at the nightlife column in that table and the mechanism is obvious. Every one of these cities rates around 3.0 to 3.4 for nightlife and social life, and our score tracks that rating at +0.84. These are not cities our data thinks are bad. They are cities our score is not built to appreciate.

Cost is where the data disagrees with itself most

There is a third disagreement, subtler than either table. Cost correlates +0.69 with connectivity and +0.47 with safety, but only -0.22 with the annual weather rating — which is to say, slightly negative. Expensive cities have marginally worse weather in our data.

That is a real finding about where wealth is, not a scoring quirk. The high-income world is concentrated in northern Europe, North America and north-east Asia, all of which have four seasons and cold winters. Warm, dry, stable climates are disproportionately found in poorer countries. If your priority is climate, the cost-quality relationship you have internalised from every other dimension runs backwards.

Why publish the disagreements. A dataset that only shows its consistent findings is presenting an argument rather than data. These tables are generated by filtering our own numbers, they are reproducible from the city pages, and they exist because the cases where our ratings conflict are exactly the cases where a reader most needs to look past the headline.

The general lesson is worth stating once, plainly: use the aggregate to build a shortlist and the components to choose from it. Everything on this page is what happens when someone does it the other way round.

Which high-scoring nomad cities have low safety ratings?

Rio de Janeiro (score 4.1, safety 2.9), Mexico City (score 4.3, safety 3.0), Medellín (score 4.4, safety 3.2), Cape Town (score 4.3, safety 3.3). In all four, safety varies dramatically by neighbourhood in a way a city-level number cannot express.

Why do very safe cities sometimes score badly?

Because our headline score tracks the nightlife and social rating at +0.84. Iceland's small towns and the Gulf cities rate at the top of the dataset for safety and around 3.0–3.4 for social life, which pulls the aggregate down.

Do expensive cities have better weather?
