Twelve hundred dollars a month is the point below which the market thins out fast. Above it you are choosing between good options; below it you are choosing between regions, because each one offers a different compromise and there is no city that avoids all of them.
This page takes every city we track under $1,200 and finds the best of each region on our own scoring, then says plainly what each regional winner is asking you to give up.
Under $1,200 a month, the highest-scoring city in each region is Chiang Mai in Asia (4.5 at $1,000), Buenos Aires in the Americas (4.4 at $1,100), Antalya in Europe (4.1 at $1,100) and Dahab in Africa (3.9 at $900).
Asia wins outright on score. Europe's best sub-$1,200 city rates half a point lower than Asia's, which is the clearest single statement our data makes about where budget money goes furthest.

Asia: the highest scores, the worst air
Chiang Mai at $1,000 and Da Nang at $1,000 score 4.5 and 4.4, which puts them level with cities costing three times as much. The infrastructure is real, the food is exceptional, the coworking and nomad communities are decades established.
The cost is air. Chiang Mai rates 2.6 and is severe for three months a year; Da Nang at 3.7 is much better and is the quieter right answer for anyone who cares about that. The second cost is the time zone: both are effectively unavailable to European or American clients on a normal working day.
The Americas: nightlife and a safety trade
Buenos Aires at $1,100 scores 4.4 on the strength of 4.8 nightlife and 4.6 walkability, with safety at 3.8 — respectable, not high. Oaxaca at $1,100 is the calmer alternative at 4.2.
The region's genuine advantage is the time zone. These are the only cheap cities in the world with a full working-day overlap with New York and a usable one with London, which for anyone with western clients outweighs a great deal.
Europe: nothing is broken, nothing is exceptional
Antalya at $1,100 and Izmir at $1,200 lead on score, and behind them sit Brașov, Novi Sad, Plovdiv and Tirana — all around 3.9, all safe, all well connected, none of them scoring above 4.0 because the nightlife and international-community ratings are modest.
What Europe buys under $1,200 is the absence of problems rather than the presence of excitement, plus the time zone. That is a perfectly good thing to buy and our score systematically undervalues it — see the page on what the score actually measures.
Africa: the thinnest list and the most upside
Dahab at $900, Taghazout at $1,100, Essaouira at $1,100 and Marrakech at $1,200 are the practical answers, and all four score between 3.8 and 3.9 — held down almost entirely by connectivity in the mid-threes.
The compensating advantage is enormous and invisible to the score: these are the only warm-in-winter cities on earth that hold a full eight-hour working-day overlap with London. If you have European clients and want sun in January, Morocco is not one option among many. It is very close to the only option.
Oceania does not appear in the under-$1,200 table at all, because nothing we track there costs that little. The cheapest Oceanian cities in our data are in Fiji at around $1,500, and Australia and New Zealand start well above $2,000.
The Middle East is barely there either. Exactly one of the thirty cities we cover in the region comes in at or under $1,200 — Irbid in Jordan, at $1,200 and a score of 3.2. The Gulf cities are all several times that. A single qualifying city is not a regional recommendation and we are not presenting it as one; it is in the table because leaving it out would misrepresent the region as having nothing at all.
